What is an NPI?
The National Provider Identifier is the 10-digit number every HIPAA-covered health care provider in the United States uses on claims and other standard transactions. Individuals (physicians, nurses, therapists, pharmacists…) and organizations (hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, labs…) each get their own NPI from CMS. The number never changes, even when a provider moves or changes specialty.
